Koh Yai Yao… Relax and do nothing!

We were very excited for some days in the sun, bathing at the sea! We took a plane to Phuket and went straight to the pier, a boat was expecting us to take us to a little island, not crowded and not so touristic. We got there and the hotel couldn't be better, 2 huge rooms with a big living room and a nice terrace! It was hot so we quickly jumped into our bathing suits and off to the beach. When we got there we immediately realised that we would be spending all the time in the hotel pool. At low tide the sea was very far and the sand was mud, the water was not that clear and it was not very inviting. We had fun at the beach walking on the sand chasing crabs (they were huge!) but that was it… We spent the days in the pool, a very good one, overlooking the beach. Once more we realised we are not the resort kind of people, we get easily bored. A few days it’s ok, but more than that we start “taking each others hairs”! The hotel was in the middle of nowhere, there was a small “village” with about 2 restaurants, a massage cottage (best massage in Thailand) and a pair of convenience stores that sold a little bit of everything. We had to get out, so we went out for dinner in the village and for a couple of massages (in the hotel it was 3 times more expensive)…
We were not very worried that the beach was “useless” because we were going to spend a month island hopping in Thailand, but my mother loves the beach and was going home after Koh Yai Yao, we had to find a way for her to see something of the amazing Thailand Islands. We hired a boat to take us to Koh Hong, a group of typical Thailand Islands with the hight rock formations, emerald green sea and white sandy beaches. We were really lucky with the weather, because it hadn't been great but on that day the sun was shining and it was very warm. We went to a beautiful beach, then to a lagoon and we skipped some places because from the boat we saw it was too crowded. We asked the boat captain to take us to a nice beach with not many people. We ended up spending most of the time in an incredible beach almost to ourselves. Pedro climbed the rocks all the way to the top and the view was amazing.
On New Year's Eve we didn’t want to spend a lot (really a LOT) of money on the special gala dinner/evening, plus we just wanted to have dinner and go to sleep early (we wouldn't be awake by midnight). Not only because of the kids, we just couldn’t care less about New Year, we never did. The hotel had some tables outside, by the pool, for those not wanting to take part in the party. We were not the only people, there were some other families and couples eating in the dark, yes, in the dark! There was no light and the waiters couldn’t care less, they were actually quite annoyed to be serving us instead of being in the party. It was not very nice I have to say, if we knew it would be like this we would have gone to one of the village’s restaurants.
Time here was good to relax, do nothing, and take a break from all the walking we did in Bangkok and Chiang Mai. Kids were so happy to be put and play all the time with Grandma.
Koh Yai Yao was not what we had imagined but we enjoyed our time there!

Estávamos com muita vontade de passar uns dias de sol e praia. Apanhamos um avião para Phuket e fomos directamente para o porto onde apanhamos um barco para Koh Yao Yai (KYY), um pequena ilha pouco turística. O hotel onde ficamos não podia ser melhor: 2 quartos grandes, uma sala e um terraço. Estava calor por isso pusemos os fatos de banho rapidamente e fomos para a praia. Mal lá chegamos realizamos que íamos passar muito tempo na piscina :-) Na maré baixa o mar estava muito longe, a areia era lamacenta, a água muito escura e não muito apetecível. Era divertido andar na praia a caçar caranguejos, havia muitos e enormes, mas pouco mais. Passamos os dias na piscina, que era óptima, mesmo em cima da praia. Mais uma vez chegamos rapidamente à conclusão de que os resorts não são para nós. Ficar uns poucos dias sabe bem mas depois começamos a sentir-nos presos. O hotel estava no meio do nada, perto de uma pequena vila com 2 restaurantes, um sítio de massagens (as melhores que tive na Tailândia) e 2 lojas de conveniência que vendiam um bocado de tudo. Aproveitamos para jantar umas vezes fora e fazer uma massagem.
O facto da praia não ser boa não foi um problema porque tínhamos pela frente 1 mês para andar de ilha em ilha mas a minha Mãe adora praia e voltava para casa depois de KYY e queríamos arranjar uma maneira de que visse as famosas praias da Tailândia. Alugamos um barco para nos levar a Koh Hong, um grupo de ilhas típicas da Tailândia com penhascos altos, água verde esmeralda e areia branca. Tivemos muita sorte com o tempo porque nos dias anteriores não tinha estado bom e neste dia estava sol e calor. Fomos a uma praia muito bonita, a uma lagoa e depois saltamos algumas da etapas intermédias (praias com muita gente) e pedimos ao capitão para nos levar a alguma praia bonita e com pouca gente. Acabamos por passar uma grande parte do tempo numa pequena praia quase deserta. O Pedro subiu as rochas até ao topo e as vistas eram incríveis.
Na passagem de ano não quisemos gastar uma fortuna no ‘gala dinner’ do hotel onde estávamos e seria irrealista achar que nós ou os miúdos chegaríamos à meia noite (e também porque não ligamos muito à passagem de ano). O hotel montou umas mesas ao ar livre para os que não queriam a festa. Achávamos que íamos estar sozinhos mas havia mais um casal e uma família a jantar connosco às escuras…sim, no sítio onde estávamos não havia luz e ninguém se pareceu importar muito com isso. Acho que foi um castigo por não termos querido a festa e os empregados estavam chateados por nos servir ali em vez de estar na festa. Não foi lá muito bom e se tivéssemos sabido, teríamos ido para os restaurantes da vila.
Depois da canseira de Bangkok e Chiang Mai, os nossos dias aqui souberam muito bem. Especialmente o Francisco e a Teresinha gostaram de estar uns dias no mesmo sítio a brincar com a avó.
Koh Yao Yai não foi exactamente o que estávamos à espera mas foi divertido.
