The Great Ocean Road!

We’ve read a few things about the Great Ocean Road (GOR) and coming from Portugal with the amazing coastline, beautiful beach and scenery we were not expecting to be amazed. We even doubted about doing it, but we had enough of the city so we grabbed a car and started our trip along the GOR.
After driving about 1 hour from Melbourne you arrive at the GOR near Torquay (where it starts) and our first stop was Bells Beach, a place we wanted to check out for it’s surfing heritage. From there we kept driving along for a few more minutes to Aireys Inlet a cape with a lighthouse. Because of an episode of a TV cartoons kids watch over and over again, going up a lighthouse was something they kept asking to do. Unfortunately this specific lighthouse was for 12 year olds or older so we would have to wait for the next one. After a quick lunch in Lorne we headed to the Erskine Falls to get a close look at the waterfalls. It was quite a walk down with a lot of steps. Kids went up and down singing and jumping, while I was complaining inside cos my legs hurt LOL. It was a beautiful place, pictures speak for itself… The cold weather was getting serious so we got back to the car and made our way to the hostel we would be staying in Apollo Bay. Normally it would be a 45 minute drive but due to bad weather in the previous weeks part of the GOR was closed and we had to make a detour trough the Great Otway National Park so it took us around 2 hours driving on the forest to get there. In my opinion the scenery was even better than the road by the sea. We stayed in a youth hostel, as a result of what the Spanish call a ‘cagada monumental’ by Pedro who had booked this without noticing it had shared bathrooms, something we totally avoid because of the ‘midnight urgencies’ the kids usually have :-) Diapers on both of them and we were OK for 1 night.
Early morning next day we were on the road again to visit the Cape Otway Lighthouse (kids loved it) and one of the highlights of the GOR, the 12 Apostles. On the way we saw a few motorhomes and couldn’t help but feeling a bit jealous…we miss being on the road in a motorhome.
In the afternoon we continued on the GOR, stoping on many lookouts in Port Campbell, London Bridge and Bay of Islands (this last one a beautiful place) before reaching Warrnambool where we would stay for the night.
The last day of the trip started with a visit to Tower Hill Wildlife Reserve, an old volcano that now is a big lake. About 1 hour walking, we spotted lots of emus, a few Koalas and a Canguru, before getting back on the car and drive back to Melbourne where we were due to return the car and get on our flight to somewhere warmer :-)

Investigamos algumas coisa sobre a Great Ocean Road (GOR) e, vindos de Portugal com uma costa linda e praias fantásticas, não estávamos à espera de ficar deslumbrados com a GOR. Chegamos a pensar não ir mas como ja estávamos um bocado fartos de estar no meio da cidade agarramos num carro e fizemo-nos à estrada a caminho da GOR.
A GOR começa oficialmente em Torquay, a 1 hora de carro de Melbourne, e a nossa primeira paragem foi em Bells Beach, um lugar que queríamos ver por toda a tradição de surf que tem. Daí continuamos a guiar mais uns minutos para Aireys Inlet, um cabo com um farol com vistas quase a 360 graus para o oceano. Por causa de um episódio de desenhos animados que os miúdos já viram 500 vezes, ir a um farol era um programa que eles já nos tinham pedido várias vezes. Infelizmente a visita a este farol era apenas para maiores de 12 anos e tivemos que esperar pelo próximo farol.
Depois de um rápido almoço em Lorne fomos para as Erskine Falls para ver de perto as cataratas. Foi um passeio dos bons com muitas escadas. Os miúdos desceram e subiram aos saltos e a cantar enquanto eu me queixava em silêncio de dores nas pernas :-) Um sítio lindo, as fotografias falam por si. O frio estava a apertar por isso voltamos para o carro e pusemo-nos a caminho do hostal dessa noite em Apollo Bay. Normalmente seriam 45 minutos de viagem mas devido ao mau tempo das semanas anteriores parte da GOR estava cortada e tivemos que fazer um desvio pelo Great Otway National Park. Foram 2 horas de caminho pela floresta para lá chegar e na minha opinião a paisagem foi ainda melhor do que na estrada pelo mar. Ficamos num ‘youth hostel’, resultado daquilo a que os espanhóis chamam uma ‘cagada monumental’ do Pedro que o reservou sem reparar que os quartos não tinham casa de banho. Quartos sem casa de banho é algo que não queremos por causa das ‘urgências nocturnas’ do miúdos. Fraldas nos 2 e ficou tudo bem por 1 noite. Muito cedo na manhã seguinte ja estávamos a caminho do farol do Cabo Otway (os miúdos finalmente visitaram um farol e adoraram) e de uma das principais atrações da GOR, os 12 Apóstolos. No caminho cruzamo-nos com algumas motorhomes e foi inevitável sentir alguma inveja…temos saudades de estar na estrada numa motorhome. À tarde continuamos na GOR, parando em muitos miradouros em Port Campbell, London Bridge e Bay of Islands (este último especialmente bonito) antes de chegar a Warrnambool onde passamos a noite. O último dia começou com uma visita ao Tower Hill Wildlife Reserve, um antigo vulcão que é agora um grande lago, onde durante um passeio de 1 hora vimos vários emus, alguns koalas e um canguru. De volta ao carro voltamos para Melbourne onde tínhamos que devolver o carro e apanhar um avião para algum sítio mais quente.
