Don’t expect a top things to do in Sydney list neither a best places in Sydney, or something like that. By now, you probably know that the thing we like the most is to wonder around in cities. Walking in different neighbourhoods looking at the people and places…
We started with a wrong foot in Sydney, it was Sunday and the sun was shinning, what do we decide to do? Let’s go to Bondi Beach, off course! Apparently the entire population of Sydney plus all other visitors had the same idea. We jumped on the train to Bondi Junction and everything was fine, when we got out we couldn’t believe, thousands of people waiting for the connection to Bondi Beach, we waited a little and the bus line didn't move. Let’s get out of here and find a plan B. The Opera and the area around there? Why not? It turned out to be a great day… We started on the other side of harbour bridge and made a picnic in the grass near a market. We then crossed the harbour bridge by foot to find a chocolate fair, there was a never ending of stalls selling that precious substance, we had the most delicious fudge. We wandered around there and then walked all the way back home, it was quite a walk. We got home exhausted, I don't even know how the kids didn't complaint! It was the first time on this trip we wished we were without the kids, all those cool bars and restaurants full of people, we just wanted to go in and have a couple of drinks. But instead we cooked dinner at home and off to sleep we went. On the second day, left foot again! We decided to check out the cool Newtown neighbourhood and have lunch in an Italian restaurant. When we got there the restaurant only opens for dinner and on Monday everything is closed in Newtown! We just wondered around the empty streets and closed shops and came back home. The next day we spend the morning at home playing and making puzzles (the kids have walked too much on the past days so we decided to give them a break), but we kept moving and spent the afternoon in the Museum of Contemporary Art of Sydney, we are so lucky that the kids love to go to museums and have a great time there. There was a shadows exhibition and we played a lot there. The next day was Pedro’s birthday and I had booked an indian restaurant (his favourite food) for dinner, but since it was very close from where we were we just changed it for that day. It was too early when we left the museum so we stayed and watched a big cruise ship leaving the harbour. The kids were fascinated and since then they are always asking why aren't we sleeping in the boat that looks like a city! LOL! Dinner was delicious, the best indian food we have had since we have been in India many years ago. If you ever come to Sydney you have to go to The Spice Room!
We finally went to Bondi Beach, the weather was not great but it was good enough to climb rocks and make sand castles. Once again we walked km and km, we did the costal walk of Bondi. On our way home we changed our mind in the middle of the way and decided to try Newtown at the “rush” hour. It was so cool and lively. We finally ate that delicious pizza at Gigi!
Manly Beach was another place we wanted to go, specially because we have a Portuguese friend living there and she had a baby 2 months ago, we really wanted to meet him. We met them at the ferry and walked all the way to the Boathouse restaurant where we had a nice lunch. We walked then all the way back to the ferry and spent the rest of the day at the beach just in front. Kids were playing in the sand while we were chatting. It felt so good to spend a day with friends from home!
I went back to Manly again with Teresinha to meet a sewing friend (the very talented Lauren from Tadah Patterns) and the boys went to the zoo. We both had a nice time, but we enjoy much more when the 4 of us are together :-)
Since the day at the museum went so well we decided to give it another go, we tried our luck with the first non interactive exhibition, Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, at the Art Gallery. We all found it interesting, Francisco looked at all the pictures and paintings, making a lot of questions.
It was in Sydney that the kids went to the cinema for the first time, it was raining and staying and entire day at home was not an option!
About where we stayed… It was not easy to find places to stay in Sydney, it was all booked. We found a place for the first nights and then spent a morning like crazy trying to find where to sleep the rest of the nights. It was in a very small studio, we were not very comfortable there so when we saw a 2 bedrooms available for a great price we couldn't believe it. We moved straight away and were amazed with our luck, the house was incredible! Until the sun came down and a lot of crawling insects, known as cockroaches :-), started to come from everywhere. I’m not exaggerating, we killed more than 50 the first night, while having breakfast the next morning we spotted another 17… We immediately started to look for another house but found nothing. We had to deal with it. We went to the supermarket and bought all kinds of products to kill those ugly creatures. It got better but there was not a single day that we didn't killed more than 10! How we survived? The house was really amazing and the kids were really happy and didn't want to move (there were a lot of toys there). Plus, the owners were so nice… You can call me crazy, but I do recommend this house to everyone! Apparently it’s cockroaches season and Sydney is full of them. We saw pest control vans in several houses and a lot of people told us it’s normal. So if you have to live with them you better do it in style and this house is perfect!

Como já nos conhecem, não esperem uma lista do género ‘Principais coisas para fazer em Sydney’. Preferimos andar pela cidade e perder-nos em diferentes bairros, ver os sítios e as pessoas.
Começamos com o pé esquerdo em Sydney. Domingo, um dia lindo de sol, o que é que decidimos fazer? Vamos para Bondi Beach claro! Aparentemente toda a população de Sydney mais todos os turistas tiveram a mesma ideia. Entramos no comboio para Bondi Junction e tudo estava perfeito até termos saído na estação onde apanhávamos o autocarro para a praia…milhares de pessoas em filas intermináveis que não andavam. Esperamos um bocado e decidimos ir embora e arranjar um plano B. A zona da Opera de Sydney? Why not? Acabou por ser um dia excelente. Começamos no lado oposto da Harbour Bridge onde fizemos um picnic na relva perto dum mercado de domingo. Depois do almoço atravessamos a ponte a pé e no outro lado estava a decorrer o Festival do Chocolate com um sem fim de bancas a vender uma enorme variedade de produtos de chocolate. Embora não estivesse nos planos, claro que acabamos por experimentar alguma coisa: o melhor chocolate fudge do mundo :-). Andamos por toda a zona à volta da Ópera e depois fomos a pé para casa. Foi uma longa caminhada, chegamos a casa de rastos e a estranhar não ter tido demasiadas reclamações dos miúdos. Sydney foi a primeira cidade onde gostaríamos de ter estado sem crianças porque a quantidade de bares e restaurantes com óptima pinta é interminável e a vontade de ir beber umas cervejas era muita. Em vez disso jantamos em casa e tudo para cama bem cedo.
No segundo dia, continuamos com o pé esquerdo. Decidimos ir ver a zona de Newtown, o bairro cool de Sydney, e tínhamos pensado almoçar numa pizzaria da qual tínhamos lido boas reviews. Quando lá chegamos o restaurante estava fechado (só abre para jantar) e tudo em Newtown estava fechado por ser segunda-feira. Passeamos um bocado pelas ruas vazias e lojas fechadas antes de voltar para casa.
Brincar e fazer puzzels foi o programa da manha seguinte (andamos imenso nos primeiros dias e decidimos dar um descanso aos mais pequenos do grupo) mas passamos a tarde no Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Sydney (temos sorte que eles gostam de museus). Uma das zonas tinha uma grande exibição de luzes/sombras e estivemos lá a brincar um bom bocado. No dia seguinte o Pedro fazia anos e eu tinha reservado um restaurante indiano (a comida preferida dele) para jantar mas como o restaurante era muito perto do museu onde estávamos mudamos a reserva e fomos nesse dia. Como ainda era cedo demos um passeio pela zona do porto e da Ópera e ficamos parados a ver um enorme cruzeiro partir do porto ao fim do dia. Os miúdos estavam fascinados com o tamanho do navio e desde esse dia que nos perguntam quando é que podemos ir dormir para um barco do tamanho de uma cidade :-). O jantar foi OPTIMO, a melhor comida indiana que experimentamos desde a nossa ida à Índia há uns anos. Se gostam de comida indiana e vierem a Sydney têm de ir ao Spice Room!
Acabamos por ir a Bondi Beach com um tempo que não estava perfeito mas suficiente para andar a passear, trepar rochas e brincar na areia. Uma vez mais andamos vários quilómetros ao longo da costa de Bondi Beach. No regresso a casa mudamos de ideias e decidimos voltar a tentar Newtown, desta vez à hora de ponta. Desta vez havia muita vida nas ruas (demasiada?) e acabamos por conseguir comer a pizza no Gigi!
Manly Beach era outro sítio onde queríamos ir, especialmente porque temos uma amiga portuguesa que lá vive e que teve um filho há 2 meses. Tínhamos que ir conhecer o bebe! Encontramo-nos à saída do ferry que se apanha desde o centro de Sydney e cruzamos a pé toda a zona de Manly Beach até ao restaurante BoatHouse onde almoçamos.
Depois do almoço voltamos para trás e passamos o resto da tarde na praia em frente à ‘estação’ do ferry. Miúdos a brincar na areia e adultos à conversa. Soube bem passar o dia com amigos ‘de casa’!
Eu ainda voltei a Manly Beach com a Teresinha para me encontrar com uma amiga ‘das costuras’ (a Lauren das Tadah Patterns) num dia em que os homens foram ao jardim zoológico de Sydney. Todos nos divertimos mas preferimos quando passamos o dia os 4 juntos.
Como o dia no Museu de Arte Contemporânea correu tao bem decidimos voltar a arriscar, desta vez numa exposição ‘não interactiva’ da Frida Kahlo e Diego de Rivera na NSW Art Gallery. Todos gostamos e o Francisco viu todos os quadros e fotografias sempre a fazer muitas perguntas.
Foi em Sydney que o Francisco e a Teresa foram pela primeira vez na vida ao cinema. Um dia de semana de manha, a chover, foi o cenário ideal já que ficar em casa não era uma opção.
Sobre a casa onde ficamos: Não foi fácil encontrar onde ficar em Sydney, estava tudo cheio. Descobrimos um estúdio para as primeiras noites e depois tivemos uma manha de loucos à procura de sítio onde ficar nas restantes noites. Era um estúdio muito pequeno e muito desconfortável por isso quando descobrimos uma casa óptima com 2 quartos e óptimo preço nem queríamos acreditar. Mudamos imediatamente e estávamos felizes com a nossa sorte, a casa era perfeita… até que chegou o fim do dia e um MONTE de bichos rastejantes (baratas) começaram a sair de todos os sítios. Sem exagerar matamos mais de 50 baratas na primeira noite e no dia seguinte ao pequeno almoço apareceram (e morreram) mais 17. No mesmo minuto recomeçaram as buscas de outra casa mas não encontramos nada. A única opção era enfrentar o problema. Fomos ao supermercado e compramos um arsenal de produtos para matar as pequenas criaturas. A situação melhorou mas não houve um dia em que não encontrássemos mais de 10 baratas. Como é que ali ficamos? A casa era muito boa, os miúdos estavam a adorar lá estar (tinham um quarto de brinquedos!) e os donos (uma família francesa que foi 1 mês para Paris) foram impecáveis a lidar com a situação. Posso estar maluca mas recomendaria esta casa a quem venha a Sydney. É a época das baratas e Sydney está cheio delas. Vimos carrinhas de ‘pest control’ à porta de várias casas e muitas pessoas nos disseram que era normal.
Se tens que viver com baratas, mais vale ser à grande numa casa perfeita!
