The beginning of our motorhome adventure!

Yesterday was an amazing day! We woke up at 5 .30 a.m. (this part was not so amazing) and we drove our “home” to the airport, boarded a small plane and landed at the beach in Fraser Island. A car was waiting for us there so we could drive around. First stop was lake Mackenzie! An incredible lake inside the island, transparent water and powder sand. It’s a pity it was too cold to dive and swim. We were almost alone there… Perfect place! To get there is about 11km on a trail that took us 45 minutes. After spending some time there we took a trail to reach the 70 mile beach, another hour on sandy roads among the trees. We got to the beach and drove north, by the sea… it was great fun! Everyone loved the high speed on the sand and crossing over creeks from time to time with a splash on the car windows. We stopped at the Maheno wreck for lunch, instead of lunching there in some restaurant we preferred to pack some sandwiches and eat at the beach. We spent some time there with the kids jumping on sand dunes while I took a little nap. After lunch, back in the car, we kept heading north on the beach, stopping once in a while. Here we appreciated not being so warm as you cannot go in the sea, sharks, jelly fish and rips are not our thing. We drove all the way back to the “airport” in the sand and took the little plane back home. It was a perfect day, the only thing we missed was seeing some whales. We flew some time over the sea searching for them but without any luck.
Going a few days back…
It was time to leave out perfect home in Brisbane and start our motorhome adventure. We were quite anxious for that having never set foot before on a motorhome! Early in the morning we picked it up and drove to the sunshine coast. We were quite relaxed about getting a spot on camping sites since there are hundreds (literally) but we found out it is not so easy, most of them were fully booked!!! And you cannot just park it anywhere and sleep. We were lucky to get the last spot at Cotton Tree Holiday Park, its a beautiful place, set between the ocean and a river, right in front of the sand. Before we could start exploring we had to stock up on groceries and fill our fridge. By the time we finished setting up everything it was night so we cooked something and went to sleep. The next morning we went for a walk at the beach and set camp between the ocean and the river. Kids went for a swim (too cold for us) and we spent the entire morning there! Lunch, naps and off we went to the same spot again to watch the sunset. We spend 2 nights there. Funny fact: we were the only “young” people there, it looked like a seniors “home”, they were all “living” there (many stay for months), they even had plant vases in front of their caravans LOL.
On the road again to Hervey Bay, once again it was very hard to find a place, all the camping sites were fully booked. We stayed at Scarness beach, much more our thing, more “wild” and with people that rented camper vans like us, not people that moved into a camping park:-). Our neighbours were a german couple with 2 big kids, with who we shared a lot of glasses of wine! We had a great time there… Great spot, right in front of a good beach with a big playground next door!
Now we are on the road again, off we go to find some warmer lands upper north!

Ontem foi um dia espectacular! Acordámos às 5h30 da manhã (esta parte menos espectacular) e levamos a nossa “casa” até ao aeroporto, embarcamos um pequeno avião e aterramos na praia em Fraser Island. Tínhamos um carro à nossa espera para podermos explorar livremente. A primeira paragens foi no Lake Mackenzie! Um incrível lago no meio da ilha, água transparente e areia que parecia pó de talco. Uma pena estar demasiado frio para dar mergulhos e nadar. Estávamos praticamente sozinhos… Um lugar espectacular! Para lá chegar são cerca de 11km num trilho de areia e demoramos 45 min. Depois de lá passar um bom bocado fomos por outro caminho até à 70 mile beach, mais um trilho de areia no meio da floresta. Chegamos à praia e fomos para norte, pela areia junto ao mar… Mesmo muito divertido! Toda a gente adorou andar depressa na areia e atravessar riachos, que faziam saltar agua para cima do carro. Paramos no Maheno wreck , um barco encalhado por ali há anos, para almoçar. Em vez de almoçar num restaurante preferimos levar umas sandwiches e comer na praia. Ficamos por ali algum tempo, os miúdos a saltar nas dunas enquanto eu dormia uma curta sesta. Depois, de volta ao carro, continuamos a ir mais para norte pela praia, parando de vez enquanto. Na praia agradecemos o facto de não estar tanto calor porque não se pode tomar banho, entre as alforrecas, os tubarões e as correntes… Guiamos de volta até ao "aeroporto” na areia e apanhamos o nosso pequeno avião de volta a casa. Foi um dia perfeito, a única coisa que falhamos foi ver baleias. Ainda sobrevoamos durante algo tempo o mar mas sem sorte.
Mas voltando atrás uns dias….
Deixámos a nossa óptima casa em Brisbane para começar a nossa aventura de caravana. Estávamos bastante ansiosos, nunca na vida tínhamos estado numa casa com rodas! Bem cedinho de manha fomos busca-la e guiamos até Sunshine Coast. Não estávamos nada preocupados com a estadia no parque de campismo, há centenas (literalmente) mas acabamos por perceber que não era assim tao fácil, estava tudo cheio!!! E não podemos estacionar onde nos apetecer e ficar por lá a dormir. Acabamos por ter sorte e conseguimos um sítio no Cotton Tree Holiday Park, um sítio lindo, entre o rio e o mar, mesmo em frente à areia. Antes de começar a explorar a zona tínhamos que abastecer e encher o frigorifico. Quando acabamos de pôr cada coisa em seu sítio já era tarde, fizemos o jantar e fomos dormir. Na manha seguinte, fomos dar um passeio pela praia e ‘abancamos’ entre o rio e o oceano. Os miúdos foram nadar (estava demasiado frio para nós) e por ali ficámos a manhã toda. Almoçámos, sestas e voltamos para a praia para ver o pôr do sol. Ficamos 2 noites. Curiosidade: éramos as únicas pessoas novas no parque, aquilo parecia um lar de terceira idade. Estavam à seria a viver ali (muitos ficam meses a fio), até vasos com plantas tinham à porta das tendas/caravanas HAHAHAH
De volta à estrada, direcção Hervey Bay, mais uma vez foi dificílimo encontrar um parque de campismo disponível, estavam todos cheios. Ficámos em Scarness Beach, muito mais o nosso género, mais “selvagem” e com pessoas que não se mudaram para viver nos parque de campismo. Muitas caravanas alugadas e gente mais da nossa idade. Partilhamos vários copos de vinho com os nossos vizinhos, um casal de alemães com dois filhos já crescidos. Gostamos imenso do tempo que ali ficámos… o sitio era top, em frente a uma praia espectacular e com um parque infantil mesmo ao lado!
Agora estamos de volta à estrada, lá vamos nós continuar a “subir” a ver se chegamos a paragens mais quentes!
